Skin Prick Testing
Skin prick testing (SPT) is a valuable diagnostic tool that effectively identifies allergic responses to specific allergens, aiding in the detection of food or inhaled substance allergies. During skin prick testing (SPT), a minute quantity of allergen is gently introduced beneath the skin, leading to a localised allergic response characterised by the formation of a wheal (a small bump) and flare (redness) at the test site. This diagnostic technique is suitable for individuals of all age groups, including infants, enabling comprehensive assessment and effective management of allergies across the paediatric population.

what are skin prick tests useful for?
Skin prick tests are useful if it is a possibility that a child has had an IgE-mediated reaction. Typically, minutes after exposure to a substance (they are allergic to), a child will experience a reaction. Symptoms include: swelling, itching, nettle rash, vomiting, sneezing, wheezy chest.

SPTs can also be used to find triggers for eczema and can test for the following: animal hair, house dust mite, moulds, pollen, common foods (including nuts, milk, egg, soya, fish).

They are not, however, useful for intolerances. There is no test for intolerances, with the only viable option being to avoid eating the suspected food for a period of four weeks. If symptoms (classically bloat/tummy pain/loose stools) improve, reintroduce the food to test whether the symptoms return, to diagnose the cause.
